Cuban Spies Plead Guilty

WASHINGTON (CBS4) ― A former State Department employee and his wife have agreed to plead guilty to spying on the U.S. government and providing the information to Cuba. Walter Kendell Myers, 72, was known as Agent 202 and agreed to a life sentence without parole and agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors. His wife, Gwendolyn Myers, 71, agreed to a sentence of 6-7.5 years in prison.

The couple were originally charged in June with wire fraud and serving as illegal agents for Cuba and conspiring to deliver classified information. Federal prosecutors charged Myers on Friday with conspiracy to commit espionage and wire fraud. Gwendolyn Myers was charged with conspiring to gather and transmit national defense information.

The Myers plea deal also fined them $1,735,054 and they'll forfeit their Washington apartment, a 37-foot sailboat and various bank and investment accounts.

Prosecutors said the couple worked for 30 years as clandestine agents for Cuba. The government accused Ken Myers with using his State Department computer to view more than 200 intelligence documents related to Cuba.
