Middle School To Be Searched For WWII Bombs

ORLANDO (CBS4) ― Beginning next month the Army Corps of Engineers will begin a detailed search on the grounds of an Orlando middle school for left over World War II munitions.

The Corps had never been able to conduct an extensive search with metal detectors and other bomb finding technology of a section of the grounds at Odyssey Middle School because it was occupied by portable classrooms. Now those portables are being removed because of declining enrollment at the school.

More than 400 pounds of World War II-era bombs and munitions were found on the grounds around the middle school last year. Part of the school grounds had been used by the Army in the 1940s to train bombardiers for combat. Munitions have also been found in backyards and construction sites in the area.
