Students Taking Classes Online To Avoid Gas Prices

FAU Reports A 20-Percent Increase In Online Classes

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ― The high price at the pump is changing the way students learn at colleges throughout the state.

Florida Atlantic University says they've had a 20-percent increase in the number of students enrolling in web-based courses. Over the last year more than a fifth of the university's 26,000 students signed up for at least one online class this year.

Other colleges and universities in the state are reporting similar increases in online enrollment. Officials say in addition to the savings on fuel costs, the convenience and flexibility of the classes is another big draw.

Nursing professor Rose Sherman says there had been a steady build for online classes over the years, but this year, "it's really exploded." She attributes the growth to gas prices.
