How fitting is it that on the day Americans take time to reflect on the past presidents of the United States the City of Opa-Locka will honor our current leader.
During a ceremony Monday a section of Perviz Avenue was renamed President Barack Obama Avenue making the city the first in the nation to name a street after the current president.
"I've been here for years and to have a street named after the first African-American, the 44th president, I'm excited," said pastor Jimmye Finch Larkin.
The measure to rename the street after Obama was proposed by Vice-Mayor Dorothy "Dottie" Johnson; it received unanimous approval in the commission.
The city's President's Day festivities kicked off with a Hail to The Chief Parade. Jo Marie Payton, star of the TV's Family Matters and former Opa-Locka native, will be the parade's Grand Marshall.
After the official street renaming ceremony, the city hosted a party in Sherbondy Park which featured a mini-job fair, health screenings, food and a battle of the bands.
