Entertaining The Kids On A Budget
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
As the economic problems continue to mount, many parents have started to bypass the expensive days out with the children and instead are looking for cheap alternatives.
"We always use the park as a good form of entertainment," said Nancy Gould. "For a family of five to go to lunch or go bowling, it's probably 100 dollars, so it's a lot cheaper and a lot more fun." She often meets her friends and their kids.
Sharon Harvey Rosenberg, author of the Frugal Dutchess, said as purse strings tighten, families are continually looking for the best bargain when it comes to entertainment. "Parks have festivals, dances, recreation, all we have to do is look, most of the calendars are online," Rosenberg said.
In addition to parks, the public library is not just about books anymore. It's another resource to find ways to entertain. "Book clubs, tai chi, yoga in the library, there are a quite a few things," said Ian Rosenior from the Miami-Dade Public Library. Free movie and music rentals are also a big attraction of libraries. In fact, Rosenior said traffic at the Miami Beach branch has more than doubled in recent years.
It's a simple idea, that's likely to get a lot more attention as the complex economic situation continues to unravel.
