An Oakland Park man has been arrested for allegedly shaking a five month old baby until it stopped breathing.
It happened last Tuesday when 38-year-old Paul Day was home alone with the child, according the Broward Sheriff's Office. Day reportedly became frustrated when the baby wouldn't stop crying and started to shake the boy violently. According to the incident report, when Day noticed the child had stopped breathing he called 911.
Broward Fire Rescue rushed the child to Holy Cross Hospital; from there he was taken to Joe Dimaggio's Children Hospital in Hollywood. Doctors have said that the child, which remains in critical condition, exhibits all the signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Investigators say when talking with Day they learned that he had injured the child a week prior. Day allegedly told them during that incident the baby had slipped out of his hands. When he went to grab the baby by the legs to keep it from hitting the floor, he said he heard a snapping noise. Day said he never took the baby in for medical attention nor did he tell his wife. Doctors confirmed that both of the baby's legs had fractures.
Day has been charged with child abuse and child neglect. He's being held in the main Broward County jail on a $13,500 bond.
