Police Say Pines Teen Killed Father

PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ― Pembroke Pines Police have arrested a man who they say killed his father and tried killing his stepmother in September.

Andrew Nelson is the 18-year-old suspect police say shot at his own parents on September 29th. Early that morning police say they responded to 8440 NW 4 St. regarding a possible burglary. While on their way, they received reports that two victims had suffered gunshots in the home.

They found Scott Nelson and Julie Nelson shot when they arrived. Fire Rescue transported both to Memorial Regional Hospital in Broward. Scott Nelson, the suspect's father, died. Julie Nelson is alive. Police have booked the suspect into the Broward County Jail.

Shock and fear swept across the Pembroke Pines neighborhood as residents awoke to discover that their two neighbors had been shot overnight.

According to Pembroke Pines police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Davis they received a call just after 3:30 a.m. from a person inside the home who said that someone was breaking into his family's home in the 84-hundred block of NW 4th Street. Family friends later identified that person as Andy Nelson.

Neighbor Debbie Girouard said she can't believe her two friends were shot after staring down the barrel of a gun. Corey Gillis, who lives nearby, said the burglary and shooting had him a bit on edge.

"Hell yeah, I actually just bought a gun recently because I just turned 21. I'm kinda glad I have it in the house now," said Gillis.

As friends and neighbors emotionally dealt with the shooting, detectives combed through the home, even digging through the trash, looking for any clue that could point them in the right direction. Investigators also spoke with Andy but didn't arrest him at the time.

Family friends say the teen has had a couple of run ins with the law.

"His son's previously been in a lot of trouble. He's been in and out of jail. Oh my god," said Girouard.

Andy Nelson was already awaiting trial on multiple grand theft charges.
