State Inspectors Have Bone To Pick With Pet Stores
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
State inspectors will be watching pet stores closely this holiday season to make sure they are complying with state laws.
Inspectors from the
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be verifying that dogs and cats adopted out are at least 8 weeks old and that stores have the appropriate health certificate that the animals are properly vaccinated have been given a clean bill of health by a licensed vet.
Over the next five weeks, they will be visiting pet stores and dealers.
"Pets bring a great deal of joy to families and are often a considerable investment," Department Chairman Charles Bronson said in a statement. "So it's important to do business with a reputable pet store or dealer who knows and follows the law to avoid problems from occurring after a purchase of an animal."
Consumers are warned against purchasing pets on impulse. Anyone can report a problem to the state by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) or file a complaint by
