Accident Puts Triathlon Leader Out Of Race
KEY BISCAYNE (CBS4) ―
An early-morning triathlon ended with one of the participants rushed to the hospital Sunday morning after the cyclist was hit by a pickup truck.
37-year-old Miguel Tellez was riding on the Rickenbacker Causeway shortly after 8 a.m when, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, he was hit by a pickup truck near the entrance to the Rusty Pelican restaurant on Virginia Key. Tellez, who was leading the race at the time, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital.
His condition was not immediately known.
Tellez was one of the participants in the Key Biscayne Triathlon Trilogy #1. This was the first of three events, the second planned for July and the third for August.
Those taking part started with a quarter mile swim in Biscayne Bay before mounting their cycles for a 10 mile race across the causeway to the mainland and back to Crandon Park.
Once at the park, the racers faced a third task; a 3.1 mile run around Crandon Park ending near the Carousel on the park grounds, Tellez was hit by the truck before he could finish the third and final task.
Others who took part in the race were rattled by the collision. Marcia Bromberg, who finished the race, said she heard the crash.
''I didn't want to ride my bike anymore but another cyclist told me to keep going and I did,'' she told The Herald.
The name of the driver of the pickup was not immediately available. It's not known if the driver was charged.
