Drivers Will Need PIP Auto Insurance Under New Law

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― Florida drivers must have personal injury protection auto insurance under a new law that takes effect January 1st.

The state's no-fault auto insurance system requires drivers to carry at least $10,000 of personal injury protection coverage.

The system expired last October, but state lawmakers approved a law that reinstates the requirement on New Year's Day.

Most people won't have to do anything to comply with the new law.

Many never got rid of PIP coverage during the three months when it wasn't required.

For those who have insurance without PIP, their company should add it to their policy automatically starting January first.

State spokeswoman Ann Nucatola said  it's a  good idea to check your policy to make sure you're covered because you could face some penalties if you're not.
