Yellow Cab Drivers Stage Protest At Port

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Hundreds of Broward County yellow cab drivers staged a work stoppage Saturday at Port Everglades.

Drivers spent the day playing checkers, dominos and cards. They were protesting their inability to get into the port until 7 a.m.

"When you do get in finally the shuttles have already gotten all the good fares," protest organizer Jean Gilles told CBS 4 News Reporter Joan Murray. "We only get the short fares."

Fares aren't the only trouble. Drivers say they are being nickel-and-dimed by their company and that limo service started at the airport two years ago has stripped them of their ability to make a decent wage.

Even their bathrooms are substandard. The vending machines don't work and they don't feel safe; their fire extinguishers are out of date.

"We've been treated badly in Broward County. The drivers have no one to talk for them. It's a scary job," said driver Fredner Boursqut. He was arrested when he refused to pick up a fare at Port Everglades.

After eight hours, the drivers returned to work. They say they will take their grievances to the Broward County commission on Wednesday.
