--Sources told CBS4's Michael Williams that a piece of equipment used to regulate voltage failed in a substation in the Miami area. This created a surge. For safety reasons, FPL spokesman Bob Coleman said they shut down two power generation units at Turkey Point. In a domino effect, the loss of power from Turkey Point affected eight power plants across the state. Sporadic power outages were reported from Daytona Beach to Key West.
--Officials are investigating why controls mean to isolate the problem to the substation failed.
--FPL has more than 4.4-million customers in the state; 700-thousand were affected by the outage.
--The Broward Sheriff's Office reported that only the southwestern cities of Davie, Cooper City and Weston were affected.
--The outage affected the Florida Keys which lost power for 15 minutes.
--FPL is working to correct the problem, no word on when they will have the system repaired.
--Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said there is no indication the outage was caused by foul play.
--Cell phone service and traffic lights were affected by the outage. The Florida Highway Patrol recommended that all drivers treat darkened intersections as 4 way stops.
--At Miami Dade county schools, children were kept in their classrooms until it was deemed safe. After-school activities, athletics and night school were canceled.
--YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade's programs to include after- school care and early learning centers will close early Tuesday. Parents were contacted to pick up their children at the affected sites. If your child attends a Miami-Dade County Public School that is closing early, there will be no after-school care available.
--Miami Beach Parks & Recreation facilities will be operating its normal after-school and evening programs.
--The Archdiocese of Miami temporarily locked down their schools. Parents were advised to follow the advisements issued by the Public School system.
--All Miami Dade College campuses are operational with the exception of some buildings. Evening classes and activities will proceed as normally scheduled. Students and staff can call the MDC Hotline at (305) 237-7500 for the latest updated information on the college's status.
--Broward's school district did not implement similar measures.
--Miami International Airport and Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport were not affected by the outage.
--The Port of Miami was not affected by the outage; most cruise lines did not have ships in port on Tuesday.
--Miami Dade's Metrorail and MetroMover were temporarily idled. Tri-Rail was not affected.
--Miami Dade partially activated their Emergency Operations Center
--By 2 p.m., Miami Police reported most city residents had their power restored.
--Power at the Miami Dade County Courthouse was affected. All court proceedings scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, February 26th, were canceled and will be re-scheduled.
