Poll Finds Lagging Support Of Property Tax Plan

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Now that all the hoopla over the Florida legislature's special session on property tax reform has died down, a new poll finds that voters are under whelmed by the results and may not support the plan when it appears on the ballot in January.

Last week, a telephone poll of 800 registered voters was conducted by Schroth, Eldon & Associates and the Polling Company on behalf of a coalition of media outlets, including CBS4's news partners at the Miami Herald, the Palm Beach Post and the St. Petersburg Times.

Under the terms of the property tax proposal business tax assessments would be capped, homestead exemptions would be increased and homeowners would be able to take their Save Our Homes tax exemptions with them when they buy a new home.

Overall, 53-percent responded that they would support the plan; 27-percent were against it.  But when voters were informed that the property tax plan would cut into spending on education and not help first time home buyers, support slipped to 47-percent.

Nearly 80-percent of respondents said they felt the legislature did a fair to poor job when it came to addressing property tax relief and 44-percent responded that the state is heading in the wrong direction because property insurance relief tops their list of items that need to be addressed.
