Miami police say a woman in her mid 20's was threatened at gunpoint before being raped in the early Saturday in Coconut Grove. Police say the case is similar to another rape in Coconut Grove on Halloween but investigators weren't certain it was the same perpetrator.
Saturday morning's attack happened around 3:30 a.m. as the woman was sitting in a car on Mary Street. The woman was waiting for her boyfriend, police said. A man then ran up to her car and pushed her into the passenger seat at gunpoint and drove her to Virginia Street.
Once the criminal and the woman arrived on Virginia Street, the criminal took her behind an apartment complex and raped her. The rapist eventually ran off but took her wallet and car keys, according to Miami Police.
He also left many residents in the Grove feeling unsafe.
"I think it's awful, I think it's terrible. I think something has to be done around here," said Luz Beaty, who lives in the area where the rape occurred. "I've changed my way of life."
Beaty said she avoids walking around Cocowalk at night.
Lisa Fiore Kargauer, a professional dog walker, said she's going to be more careful and avoid dark areas.
"I'm pretty tough. I grew up with a lot of brothers, but it's very uncomfortable. It's gonna limit my outings and my expenditures in the Grove," Kargauer told
CBS4's Tiffani Helberg. "I'll be frank, I'm not gonna want to go out and spend money unless I have a whole group of people with me."
Police say the similarities between the
crime on Halloween and Saturday's rape were similar. Both men were armed, both wore a black skullcap, and both rapists covered their face with a red and white bandana, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald. Police said they want residents in the area to be more aware of their surroundings, but stressed they shouldn't panic.
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Miami Police Department's Special Victims Unit at (305) 603-6300 or Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade at (305) 471-8477 (TIPS).
