Gym Coach Accused Of Fondling Girl Granted Bond

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A South Florida gymnastics coach accused of molesting one of his 10-year-old students has been granted bond. Tuesday morning, Broward Judge Michael Gates set bond for Ray Adams at $5,000 and ordered him to wear a GPS ankle-monitoring device.

Adams, 38, has been jailed since his arrest on October 15th. The Boca Raton man is accused of fondling a 10-year-old girl at Bieger's gym in Deerfield Beach in September.

Investigators said Adams allegedly touched the girl inappropriately, kissed her neck, nipple and pubic area during several training sessions. He also reportedly talked to her about kissing and boys.

Adams was charged with one count of molesting a child under the age of 12 and one count of fondling a child.

Prosecutor Stacey Honowitz said in court last week that Adams has a history of inappropriate behavior against girls since 1994. She begged the judge not to release Adams on bond despite the pleas of parents who support him.

Adams' defense attorney Russell Williams said the previous charges are overblown.

"Prior record only shows that he plead to two counts of misdemeanor battery and then paid a fine and walked away," said Russell Williams, his defense attorney. "Everything else, I mean, there's nothing else. There's only allegations there."

Adams worked for two other South Florida gymnastics centers before being hired at Bieger's International Gymnastics three months ago: American Twisters in Coconut Creek and Treasure Coast Gymnastics in Martin County.

Bieger hired a company to perform a background check on Adams that turned up clean, said Bieger's attorney, Howard Scheinberg. The gym's owners also thought Adams had no criminal history because he was certified to coach through USA Gymnastics, which performs extensive background checks on coaches, Scheinberg said last week.
