South Florida Under Red Flag Fire Warning

MIAMI (CBS4) ― As relentless wildfires burn across Florida's Atlantic coast, South Florida is under a red flag fire warning for most of Tuesday.

The red flag warning is in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. It means that Miami-Dade and Broward counties are at a higher risk of brush fires because strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will combine to create explosive fire growth potential.

On Monday, Miami set a new record high temperature of 94 degrees. The old record of 92 was set in 1994. Miami also broke a record high on Sunday when the mercury reached 96 degrees to break a record set in 1989.

Fort Lauderdale also set records over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, it reached 95 and 96 degrees. Those temperatures shattered records from 1967 and 2006 respectively.

The record heat will subside mid-week. Temperatures were already about 10 degrees cooler Tuesday morning and the humidity levels dropped. The heat is expected to return this weekend.
