Improving Other Lives Would Lead To Losing His Own

Broward Crimestoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) ― Richard Entriken was a former military man who was doing his part to help improve the lives of others when the 60 year old was robbed and gunned down early Saturday morning in Pompano Beach at the rehabilitation home he operated.   The Broward Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the First Step Sober House, a two-story recovery home at 450 SW 2nd Street after receiving a report of shots being fired.

Entriken laid in a pool of blood and transported to North Broward Medical Center, where he died.

BSO homicide detectives said Entriken co-owned and worked at the residential substance and alcohol abuse recovery facility daily and was preparing to leave when he was approached by three men who robbed and shot him in the parking lot.

"It seemed like the movies, three guys just came up out of nowhere and started shooting at us," Christopher Doherty, Director of the Sober House told CBS4's Liv Davalos. "Richard was approached by one of the gunmen, he gave up the rent collection bag to him, and the gunman continued to put his gun up consequently shot him in the head."

Police said the 3 suspect fled the scene in a dark blue or black compact, newer model, possibly 4-door, foreign-made vehicle with dark tinted windows.

Investigators are not saying how much money was taken.

Entriken was a former Vietnam veteran who was awarded two Purple Hearts, and a Silver Star, leaves behind a legacy of hope. Entriken opened the recover house dozens of years ago, he himself just celebrated 16 years of being sober on Friday.
