Dozens of police officers including captains, majors, undercover officers and even the department spokesman helped guard the home and businesses of Scott Rothstein while he was allegedly running a $1 billion Ponzi scheme, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
According to the report from the Sentinel, off-duty officer from the Fort Lauderdale police department provided security for Rothstein's home in Harbor Beach, the Bova Prime restaurant in Las Olas, and the Rothstein law firm.
Fort Lauderdale police said their officers witnessed no criminal activity during the work for Rothstein. "There is no police department employee that had any idea what was going on, to my knowledge," said Sousa, the spokesman, who worked at Rothstein's home several times and filled in occasionally at Bova told the Sun-Sentinel. "
There is no wrongdoing on the part of our officers."
The Sentinel reported Rothstein paid $40 to $50 per hours to the officers over 31 weeks, which translated to a total of $296,000. Fort Lauderdale police stopped the detail after investors voiced concerns about the attorney's deals on November 2.
Rothstein was the only person in the history of the Fort Lauderdale police department to have permanent 24 hour police protection at his home. Rothstein still hasn't been charged by federal authorities.
