Sarasota Woman Killed Trying To Save Her Dog

SARASOTA (CBS4) ― An act of compassion for a family pet cost a Florida woman her life.

Sarasota Fire-Rescue said after a fire broke out the house Candace Chapas, 55, and her husband were renting Friday night, both outside to safety. That's when Chapas realized her dog was still trapped inside the burning structure. Witnesses told firefighters she ran back in to save her pet but became trapped by walls of flame and smoke. Both Chapas and the dog were killed.

Fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a candle the family had been using because their electricity had been shut off.
