Kids Head Back To Class After Storm Delay
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
It's back to school for students and teachers across South Florida. Tropical Storm Fay extended their summer vacation by two days and left some parents scrambling.
Bright and early Wednesday morning, school buses rolled out to carry children into their brand new school year. It's one big sign South Florida is getting back to normal after Fay.
"I was so upset that I couldn't go to school on Monday because there was a tropical storm!" Miranda Carvillo and her younger sister had to wait a couple of extra days to start school, but at least that gave their mom more time to get them new shoes.
Some students enjoyed the extra hours while their parents were less than thrilled.
In Miami Dade, 85 ninth and tenth grade boys will be the first to attend the new Young Men's Preparatory Academy at 2nd Avenue and 30th Street. The opening of Miami Dade's first public all boys academy follows the success of the all women's academy which opened in the county two years ago. School officials say the advantage of a same sex school is that it allows the students to focus more on the work at hand. In all, more than 341-thousand students will report to 394 public schools throughout the county.
