When attorney Scott Rothstein went to work at his office in a high rise building on Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, he walked into an office like none other.
"The inner-sanctum" is what attorney Kendall Coffey called Rothstein's posh office. "This is the entrance into the inner-sanctum of Scott Rothstein," explained Coffey, as he stood outside the security controlled door. "You won't see anything like this in any other law firm."
Coffey represents the remaining members of the law firm of Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler.
Once inside the private office, you find yourself in a walled off, soundproof suite covered in pictures of Rothstein and the rich and famous. There are many pictures of him with Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Senator John McCain, sports legends and many others.
During the office tour, Coffey pointed out how separated Rothstein was, saying he ran the financial and administrative operations, and the practice of law operated outside his private office.
"You have to assume that the sound proofing is part of a structure that is highly secretive," explained Coffey. "He was literally and figuratively walling off the rest of the lawyers in his firm from his inner-sanctum."
To get in, you have to be buzzed in. But Coffey points out that Rothstein could see and hear what was going on outside his doors. The entire office was under surveillance with more than a dozen cameras and microphones watching and listening.
Coffey says the office set up explains a lot of Rothstein: "(He was) charismatic, extremely shrewd, a brilliant promoter and self-promoter, ultimately one of the most dizzying fraudsters in the history of the legal profession.
