S. Florida Pauses To Remember 9/11 Victims

CBS News Interactive: Sept. 11 And Since

NEW YORK (CBS4) ― People across South Florida took time Friday to pause, reflect and remember where they were eight years ago; the day of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

There were a number of memorial ceremonies held Friday across South Florida including one held by the Broward Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Al Lamberti and a number of BSO deputies gathered for a Patriot Day Memorial Service to remember and honor the victims who died in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in a Shanksville, Pa.

"The terrorists actions have made this a different world, but it is the courage and character of everyday heroes that helped make a world of difference in the days, months and years following the attack," Sheriff Lamberti said. "I am proud to honor the heroes who survived this tragedy and pay tribute to the lives lost on that fateful day."

A musical tribute was performed by the North Star Singers and the New Young Patriots. In addition, a bell tolled to commemorate each tragic event from the morning of the attacks.

Also part of the ceremony, a piece of steel from the World Trade Center was unveiled in its new home in the lobby of the Public Safety Building in Fort Lauderdale. The metal was given to BSO by the New York City Fire Department.

There was also a memorial ceremony outside the Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs where people vowed to never forget the victims. Coral Springs firefighters were also there along with the J.P. Taravella High School band and chamber singers which performed patriotic music.
