Girl Bitten By Shark Off New Smyrna Beach

16th Shark Attack In Volusia Co. This Year

NEW SMYRNA BEACH (CBS4) ― A New York teen will have quite a tale to tell her friends about what she did on her summer vacation after beingĀ bitten by a shark in Florida.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn says the 13-year old girl was in waist-deep water off New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday when she was bitten on the leg by a shark. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for several small puncture wounds and a 3-inch gash.

Petersohn said the odd part about the attack was that the girl was standing in crystal clear water and was several miles away from a jetty where most of the attacks happen. Generally when a shark bites a person, it's a case of mistaken identity, according to Petersohn.

The girl, who was not identified, was the 16th person to be bitten by a shark in Volusia County this year.
