Police Arrest Man In Carol City Teacher Shooting

Police Placed 4 Schools On Lockdown

A Tip Led Police To Suspects Hiding Out In Apartment Complex

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ― Miami-Dade Police announced the arrest of Patrick Lively, for allegedly shooting an algebra teacher in a robbery attempt outside Carol City Senior High Tuesday morning.

Two out of the three people taken into custody in connection with shooting of the teacher outside Miami Carol City Senior High late Tuesday morning were released by Miami Dade police. Lively remains in custody and was charged with the crime.

Police say two teachers were off campus, smoking a cigarette near Miami Carol City Senior High at 3422 NW 187th Street, when they were approached by two armed men who demanded money.  When the teachers refused, a shot was fire.  One of the teachers, identified as Sergio Miranda, was hit by the gunfire. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.  The teacher, who was not hurt, ran off to get help.

''I still can't believe it,'' 16-year old Ledarian Nixon told CBS4's news partners at the Miami Herald, ``Mr. Miranda is a great teacher. He didn't deserve anything like this.''

After the shooting, the two suspects took off on foot.  Tips to police and Crime Stoppers led Miami Dade SWAT members to an apartment complex near the school, where originally they took several people into custody.

CBS4 reporter Gary Nelson reported 3 people questioned in the case.

Late Tuesday, two of the three being held were released, no word on the third.

Immediately after the shooting, Miami Carol City High School, Carol City Middle School, and Brentwood Elementary and Barbara Hawkins Elementary were all locked down immediately after the shooting.

Lockdown means the students were confined to their classrooms for their own safety, while police searched for the suspects.

School officials say no students were injured in the incident, and parents were urged not to come to the school to pick up their children because they would not be released until the lockdown was lifted.
