Electors Pick S. Miami Commissioner's Replacement
Three Candidates Vied To Fill Jay Beckman's Seat
SOUTH MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Tuesday's special election held to pick a replacement for fallen South Miami Commissioner Jay Beckman resulted in a win for Lew Sellars, who got 61 percent of the vote.
Rene Guim got 398 votes, making up 33.17 percent of the vote, and Alec J. Rosen got 72 votes, making up 6 percent of the vote. Sellars got 730 votes.
Last April, investigators say Jay Beckman was shot and killed by his 17-year-old son. Jason Beckman, who told authorities the shooting was an accident, has been charged with first degree murder. Investigative records released last month indicate Beckman had told a friend that he was going to kill his father and make it look like an accident two weeks before the commissioner was shot.
The winner will retain the seat for the length of Beckman's term which ends in February, 2010.
