Student Ambassadors Quarantined In China
BEIJING, China (CBS4) ―
Nine Broward County high school students may remain in quarantine in China for up to seven days because of swine flu fears. The group of students was visiting China as a part of the People to People Student Ambassador program, which puts together educational trips around the world for students nominated by a former teacher.
The Chinese government said even though none of the students were sick, a fellow passenger on their flight to China had flu-like symptoms. The students left for China on Saturday and were detained on Tuesday.
The Chinese quarantines are not unusual. Travelers who may have been exposed to anyone with flu-like symptoms are routinely quarantined. Travelers including New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, his wife, and a security guard were detained last Sunday and remain in quarantine at a Shanghai hotel.
China has reported 97 H1N1 swine flu infections since May. According to the World Health Organization, 73 countries have reported over 26,000 infections and 140 deaths.
