MIAMI (CBS4) ― The CBS4 Subway Get Fit Challenge contestants have been working out and weighing in for seven weeks. Results are dramatic, contestants have become real nutrition experts and they're doing it by eating more.

"I'm not used to eating 5 to 6 times a day. I'm definitely eating more," explained contestant TJ Brooks.

He's eating more of the right food and eating more often to boost that metabolism. The focus is low calories, low carbs, pay attention to sodium, watch portions, drink a lot of water, no alcohol and learn to read labels.

One of TJ's newest must have items is Crisco cooking spray.

"Crisco spray is great on salad. It's much healthier. There's no sodium. I've been doing my research," said TJ.

All that research is paying off. This week TJ lost 17 pounds. He is now weighing in at 343 and ½ pounds and has lost a total of 51 and ½ pounds. That's an amazing accomplishment in 7 weeks.

One thing that helps is the food diary the contestants keep. The food diary allows the Physicians Weight Loss crew to monitor daily food intake and adjust their eating as needed.

All the contestants agree that being educated about eating right is the most valuable part about the Get Fit Challenge.

"Once the metabolism slows down you won't lose weight," said contestant Joseph Grooms. He's now eating 6 healthy meals a day. He used to eat fried food nearly every day but not anymore and it shows.

This week, Joseph lost another 3 pounds. He currently weighs 448 and ½ pounds. He's lost a total of 29 and ½ pounds.

Karen Jones lost 2 and ½ pounds this week. She weighs 257 pounds and has lost a total of 13 pounds. She says the most valuable lesson she's learned is that at any restaurant you can ask for a nutrition guide before you eat so you make the proper choice.

The contestants have five weeks to go.

We'll have updates on the Get Fit Challenge every Wednesday and the finalists are also blogging online at CBS4.COM/GETFIT.
