Some Sunrise Employees To Pay More For Healthcare
SUNRISE (CBS4) ―
Sunrise city officials have come up with a way to save up to a million dollars in health insurance costs.
Tuesday evening commissioners approved a plan in a vote of 3 -2 to have employees pay more for their medical care. Under terms of the plan, general employees and retirees can either pay more to stay with a PPO or switch to an HMO, according to
The Sun-Sentinel. The terms take effect on January 1st.
Under the plan, employees who pay $106 biweekly for the PPO will see their premiums rise to $287.49. Currently almost 70 percent of the city's employees are on an HMO plan.
Before the vote Mayor Roger Wishner noted that if passed, it would save the city $280,000 in current fiscal year. Commissioners Joey Scuotto and Seila Alu, both of whom voted against the plan, called the plan unfair to the employees. Alu noted that commissioners and more than one hundred top city managers got their insurance for free. But maybe not for much longer; commissioners plan to discuss that issue on later this month.
