Facing Eviction, Tamarac Woman Takes Her Own Life

TAMARAC (CBS4) ― Pushed to the brink, a Tamarac woman took her own life rather than being forced out onto the street.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said it happened Monday when deputies went to serve an eviction notice to Heather Newnam, 28, who lived in a rental home at 6902 NW 79th Street.

When a moving company truck and bank officials arrived at the home around 1 p.m. to evict her, Newnam told a real estate agent that she needed a moment to go inside the house and secure her dogs.

Witnesses told investigators they then heard a shot.

A SWAT was called in as law enforcement officials tried to make contact with Newnam. When SWAT team members went in, they found the Newnam dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police have not said if she had a history of threatening to commit suicide.
