Tamarac Names New Park After Fallen Deputy

Brian Tephford Died In The Line Of Duty In Nov., 2006

TAMARAC (CBS4) ― The City of Tamarac has honored the memory of a Broward Sheriff's deputy who was gunned down in the line of duty with a new park.

On Tuesday, the city's newest park, which encompasses 57 acres on the northwest corner of Nob Hill Road and Southgate Boulevard, was named Tephford Park after BSO deputy Brian Tephford was shot during a traffic stop in November, 2006.

"I can think of no better way of honoring Deputy Brian Tephford than dedicating a park where his three children, Alyssa, Ashley and Zachary, can visit and remember the father who was selfishly taken from them," said Sheriff Al Lamberti.

The new park features a multi-purpose path, fishing pier, sitting areas, an open play area, restroom facilities and parking.

''I'm feeling deeply honored and touched,'' Stefanie Tephford said. ``This is a great legacy to Brian.''

Tephford's name was chosen from more than 400 entries that were received by the City of Tamarac's Parks and Recreation Department.

BSO deputy Corey Carbocci, Tephford's back-up who was also shot during the traffic stop, attended the official ribbon cutting ceremony at the park along with Tephford's family, Tamarac Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco, Sheriff Lamberti, and more than 300 children from Tamarac summer camps.

''No words are adequate enough to thank a man who gave his life for his community,'' Flansbaum-Talabisco said.

A six-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office, Tephford, 34, was named Employee-of-the-Month in December 2005, and in January 2003, received BSO's prestigious Lifesaving Award for saving an inmate from suicide.

Eloyn Devon Ingraham, Andre Delancy and Bernard Forbes remain behind bars charged with first degree murder in Tephford's death.  Their trial is scheduled to begin in August.
