Tax Tea Party Held In Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― While some spent their Fourth of July in their backyards firing up their barbecues, more than one hundred people opted to spend their day exercising their right to protest their government.

Many waved signs in front of the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday protesting Washington's tax policies.

It's part of the tea parties being held nationally and are reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party.

John Young was among the protesters and he explained why he spent the afternoon on a street waving a sign.

"It's about freedom and individual rights," Young said. "This isn't a government for the government. It's a government for the people."

The protesters say they favor a smaller government and oppose skyrocketing taxes.

"Let's call it what it is, socialism," said protester Luis Sorta who traveled from Miami.

The protesters say this isn't a Democratic or Republican stance. It's a non partisan way to have their voices heard. Some fear we are headed to socialized medicine in America. Others do not support the government's bailout of the financial institutions or the auto industry.

They say these actions will mean higher taxes and strangle the American dream.
