Persons Captured On Tape Hunted In Cabbie's Death

A friend said the driver probably wasn't carrying more than $40

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) ― The search is on for the gunmen who shot and killed a South Florida cab driver. He's the fourth cab driver to be killed on the job since the year began.

The shooting took place shortly after 5:00 a.m. just off Dixie Highway, about two blocks south of Hollywood Boulevard.

The cab driver, who worked for the Friendly Checker Cab Company, reportedly went to the Midway Food store to pick up a fare, which is where he was shot by two men who took off with his wallet.

The store's surveillance cameras captured what police hope may be persons of interest.

A woman, not wanting to be identified for safety reasons, said she heard gunshots and believed two men fled from the scene of the shooting.

She told CBS4 Reporter Liv Davalos, "I heard pop! I had seen two black males running toward the tracks. They were wearing all black. I couldn't make out what they looked like."

One witness, Paul DeLisle, said he saw the driver laying outside bleeding from the head, and called 911.

Lilly Topaz of the Friendly Checker told CBS4 that he worked for the company for about three years, and she believes the family may be in Italy, where the slain driver was born.

His name has not yet been made public.

Anyone with information is asked to please call Broward CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
