Dade Teachers, District Still In Raise Stalemate

A 3 Hour Meeting Sunday Produced No Results

Union Officials Plan Subcommittes To Help Find Solutions

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A three hour meeting between the Miami-Dade School District and representatives of the United Teachers of Dade ended Sunday without any progress toward ending a dispute about teacher raises.

Superintendent Rudy Crew wants to cut raises already promised to teachers because revenues from the state have been cut, and Crew believe the district can no longer afford the raises.

The teachers and their union argue that the district has the money, but mis-management is to blame for the problems they believe administrators are trying to fix with funds earmarked for their raises.

After no progress was made resolving the issue Sunday, the union announced it would create subcommittees which will be charged with working out solutions for the standoff.

Miami-Dade schools claim to be facing a $240 million deficit, and school officials have been trimming staff, cutting expenses, and working toward other solutions to close the funding gap.

No additional meetings between the district and the union and planned.
