Miami Dade, Broward Name "Teachers Of The Year"
Coral Springs Middle School Teacher Nicole Marsala Won In Broward
Juvenile Detention Center Teacher Jacquelle Sconiers Won In Miami Dade
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
A pair of South Florida teachers all smiles Thursday after being named their county's top public school "Teacher of the Year."
In Broward the honor went to 30-year old Nicole Marsala, a history teacher at Coral Springs Middle School, who's been teaching in the district for 8 years.
Marsala received a $1-thousand scholarship from Nova Southeastern University and Florida Atlantic University and an Apple laptop.
In Miami Dade 32-year old Jacquelle E. Sconiers, who teaches business and math to teenagers at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Detention Center, was named this year's "Teacher of the Year."
Sconiers, who has been teaching in the Miami Dade district for the last 7 years, is credited with making major improvements and launching a successful Saturday FCAT prep class.
The daughter of two public schools teachers, when Sconiers graduated from Florida International University she started working as a buyer for the school district. Soon she began tutoring children and then started teaching. As this year's "Teacher of the Year," Sconiers won a 2008 Toyota Corolla from Toyota of South Florida.
Sconiers, who lives in Miami Gardens, is pursuing a doctorate in urban education at Nova Southeastern University.
