Report: Teachers Helped Kids Cheat On F-CATs

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― Forget crib notes or answers written on a hand, an investigation by the state has found a small number of teachers or counselors who have actually helped students cheat on the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test.

In Miami Dade and Broward, the Education Practices Commission found 5 instances in each county in the last 10 years where teachers or counselors assisted students or made errors in administering the F-CAT or other state mandated exam. In all 50 teachers, counselors and administrators have been disciplined for misconduct; 10 teachers have had their teaching certificates revoked while the other 40 received lesser penalties including suspensions, probation and letters of reprimand.

The Education Practices Commission, which is comprised of 17 teachers, administrators and lay citizens, found Duval had the highest number of testing violations; 8 in the last decade.

The commission reported that the numbers of "academic fraud" uncovered were tiny when compared to about 15,000 investigations the state has conducted since 1997.
