Teen Dies In Scuba Related Accident In The Keys

KEY LARGO (CBS4) ― A day in the water learning how to scuba dive took a deadly turn for a Miami teen in the Keys over the weekend.

As part of the instructional course, Virginia "Ginny" McDougal, 16, was doing an open water dive Saturday in about 26 feet of water at Elbow Reef off Key Largo. McDougal's father, who is a certified scuba diver, was also on the dive.

When she surfaced, witnesses said she started yelling and appeared to be in distress. The crew of the dive boat jumped into the water and got her back on board. According to Monroe County Sheriff's Office, she lost consciousness while being pulled to the boat and went into cardiac arrest.

Because there were other divers still in the water the dive boat couldn't leave the area so McDougal was put aboard a Towboat USA boat which rushed her to shore while CPR was performed.

She was then taken to Mariner's Hospital in Tavernier where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
