Strong Cold Front To Drop Temps Into The 40s

Severe Storms To Pounds Area As Front Moves Through

Wind Gusts Near 30 MPH Expected

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The first day of March will come roaring into South Florida thanks to a strong cold front sweeping across the state.

As the front moves across South Florida Sunday it brings with it the potential for severe thunderstorms and plunging temperatures to start next week.

In Broward County, authorities issued a cold weather emergency advisory for the homeless. Many shelters geared up to expect significantly more people. "It's very unfortunate because with the weather conditions we unfortunately have a lot of people having trouble surviving out here at night," said Robby Cisrow with a Hollywood homeless shelter. "Not only with the cold weather but this temperature can be dangerous for the health."

At Bayside in Miami the crowds were significantly thinner than usual. Cool winds kept a lot of tourists away. "I moved down from up north and this is not what I was expecting," said Greg Nowak.

"I hate it, its freezing," complained Kevin Treine, a tourist from Baltimore. "I have no tolerance anything under 70. I'm freezing."

Some of the anticipated storms may be quite strong, capable of producing lightning, quick heavy downpours and wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Unfortunately, widespread beneficial rainfall does not look likely with this front because it is not packing a great deal of moisture. However, winds are a big concern with this system with sustained speeds in the low 20s with gusts to 30mph.

After the front clears the state, a very cold and dry air mass will settle in for the start of your workweek. Overnight lows will dip into the mid 40's Monday and Tuesday in the metropolitan areas of Miami-Dade and Broward counties and upper 30's are possible in the inland areas that tend to get the coldest, for instance West Kendall and Sweetwater.

By Wednesday, high pressure will start to regain control and some of the cold air will begin to mix out of the area. Highs will be back in the mid 70's for the middle of the week and by Thursday we will be back to our seasonal average of 79°.
