Senate Votes To Ban Text Messaging While Driving

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―

Florida drivers could get a ticket for sending text messages while driving under a bill approved by a Senate committee.

The text messaging prohibition was added to a bill that says law enforcement officers could only issue tickets for text messaging or to minors talking on cell phones if the driver was pulled over forĀ  another offense. The fine for each would be $60.

The Florida Telecommunications Industry Association is concerned that cell phones and text messaging are being singled out. But spokesman David Ramba says they would support legislation that targets all distractions, such as eating, smoking or changing the stereo.

The Senate Committee on Transportation approved the bill (SB 504) unanimously. It must pass two more committees before heading to the floor. A similar bill (HB 193) has been introduced in the House.
