Deputy Investigated For Taking Nickels From Crash

Deputy in Titusville under investigation

TITUSVILLE (CBS4) ― Authorities in Titusville have opened an internal investigation looking into a deputy who may have gathered some nickels that were scattered on a highway after a U.S. Treasury truck was involved in an accident in September.

Sgt. Linda Moros, Titusville sheriff's office spokeswoman, confirmed the investigation. The truck was carrying nearly $200,000 in nickels. The coins were on their way to the Federal Reserve Bank in Miami.

The accident happened when one tractor trailer rear-ended another on I-95 north of Titusville, causing the first truck to swerve off the road while the second truck overturned and spilled 3.7 million nickels everywhere. One person died and two others were injured.
