Tomas Regalado Called 'Underdog' In Mayoral Race

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Sandwiches and sodas are not the typical menu one would expect at a mayoral launch party, but Tomas Regalado is not your typical candidate. He's a man who prides himself on being the little guy, usually shunned by big money backers. Regalado opened his new campaign headquarters today on 27th Avenue in Miami Saturday afternoon.

He said his number one issue if elected will be to cut wasteful spending. He said he already conducted a study identifying $20 million to cut without affecting city services. "We have, in the city of Miami, approximately 5,000 employees," Regalado said. "We have salaries over $300,000, we have departments that just created another department in this time of crisis so we have the leeway to cut waste."

Regalado is the longest serving Miami City Commissioner. He is said to be the underdog in the mayoral race. A title that makes him smile when mentioned because Regalado has made a career out of being the odd man out on the city commission.

"He has no problems standing alone," said Miami Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson. "I think everyone has noticed that. When it comes down to what he believes in and what his constituents believe in you can always count on Tomas to be the person to lead that for us and to carry it on for us."

Regalado goes up against the Chairman of the City Commission Joe Sanchez. Sanchez is a longtime ally of Mayor Manny Diaz, leaving office because of term limits.

As a television and radio host for Spanish news, Regalado has made a name for himself without having to spend the big bucks. It's that name and his history of standing alone that he hopes will put him in the mayoral seat come November 2009.
