A family in Davie, Fla. decided to get creative in their fight over their home which they think has toxic Chinese dry wall in it.
CBS
Maria and Alfonso Sanchez built their $1.7 million home from the ground up. They're upset and worried that they might be breathing in something toxic. "The whole house has Chinese dry wall. Everything's here, everything. That's why we're fighting to do something," Maria Sanchez told CBS4's Gio Benitez.
The Sanchez family is fighting with a huge sign on the roof of their house, facing busy Flamingo Road in Davie. It labels their home as a toxic house sold by Stonebrook, the housing development.
Inside the home, CBS4 News cameras found black pipes and wires all throughout the house. Photos taken by a professional hygienist show the problem that lies inside the walls. In some of the photos, the real color of the copper pipe is clear. The pipes are almost brand new.
"Everything that is stainless is black now. The keys that are supposed to be gold and they're all black," said Sanchez.
They worry it's making them sick. Like so many living in homes with Chinese dry wall, they say they get headaches and sore throats, but they say nobody at the top has an answer.'
"That's why we put that big banner to see if we call their attention," said Sanchez.
We went to the management and called the home's builder. Neither returned our calls. But the Sanchez family says they won't stop here. They say the sign will stay up until they get answers.
"Everything's here, so we're going to fight. We're going to fight," said Sanchez.
How do you fix it? The Sanchez family says you would literally need to tear down the massive walls at their home, even the roof.
