One Tank Travel: Key Largo And Boca Raton

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The economic recession of 2009 has forced many families across the country and in South Florida to curb their elaborate travel plans over the summer. The money problems most families are facing have forced them to look for solutions.

"We we're supposed to go to Santo Domingo, but the cash that we were going to use to take the kids on a summer vacation we changed to a car." David Cruz said.

Luckily for David, there are plenty of great places around the area that you can take your family on just one tank of gas.

Head south to Key Largo and John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park and for just ten dollars a family of four gets in, and if you can pile eight in the vehicle, it will only cost $2 more. Once in the park, you can bring your own gear and spend the day snorkeling at the first undersea park created in the United States. Bring your lunch from home and you will keep costs down.

If snorkeling isn't your cup of tea, you can also spend the day relaxing in the beauty of Key Largo or get some exercise biking or walking one of the trails at the park.

Travelers could also head north to the city of Boca Raton. Once in the city you will find numerous free options like the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. The coastal and marine preserve is home to plants and animals that you can spend hours learning about while walking the grounds.

And if you are looking for something for the kids to do in Boca Raton, there's always the Children's Science Explorium. The Explorium features numerous interactive exhibits and hours of exhibits for a $2 donation and for one extra dollar, you can also take a ride on the nostalgic carousel.
