MIAMI (CBS4) ― South Florida water managers are keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Fay as it drops a large amount of rain over and around drought-stricken Lake Okeechobee.

According to the CBS4 Weather Center, between 3 to 5 inches of rain has fallen over the lake as of 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Equally important to the rain falling directly into the lake, is the rain that falls west and north of the lake because it drains into the Kissimmee Basin. The Kissimmee Basin is where most of the lake's water comes from. The South Florida Water Management District has forecast up to 6 inches of rain to fall in the lake and just north of the lake where the Kissimmee Basin is located.

"Right now, the projected path of the wet side of the storm is going to go over Lake Okeechobee. It could bring much needed rain to the lake," said Nestor Yglesias from the South Florida Water Management District. He went on to say, "The lake is still three feet below normal. Any rain will be welcome rain over the lake."

Tuesday, the level of Lake Okeechobee stood at 11.34 feet, its highest level since March 2007. It is still well below its 1965-2007 average level of 14 feet.  The lake hit its all time low of 8.82 feet in July of 2007.

South Florida Water Management says it did not let water out of Lake Okeechobee in preparation for Fay.
