Residents of the lower southwest coast of Florida were awakened by pounding rains and roaring winds as Tropical Storm Fay moved on shore.
Fay made landfall at about 5 a.m. Tuesday at Cape Romano, just south of Naples, with winds around 68 miles an hour whipping hurricane flags. Cape Romano is the same spot where Hurricane Wilma, a Category 3 storm, came ashore in October 2005.
Most residents of Naples and Ft. Myers, who said they were prepared for the worst, now view Fay as pretty much of a 'non-event'. A different story is being told to the south, in Everglades City, where Fay's torrential rains left parts of the city under more than a foot of storm surge. Residents of the small town of about 500 people say they are used to such things. They say any time there is a torrential down pour; water covers the roadways and laps at people's homes.
"We're still here," said Corey Knapp, resident manager of the Ivey House, a bed and breakfast in Everglades City. Water was knee deep on some side roads, but he said the storm was not as bad as he expected.
In Naples, minor street flooding was reported and damages to homes were described as minimal. As Fay moves north, people took to the beach to see massive waves. Even after the crash in Miami, CBS4's David Sutta found kite surfers hitting the waves.
Governor Crist is expected tour the damage in Naples after a stop in Key West.
Late Tuesday morning traffic was light on the roads of the southwest coastline as bands of heavy rain and gusty wind continued to pound the area. Right now, some 57,000 people are without power, up from 30,000 around noon.
