MIAMI (CBS4) ― Tropical Storm Hanna is dropping rain across most of New England Saturday night as it rushes north.

The National Hurricane Center's 11 p.m. advisory puts the center of Tropical Storm Hanna near latitude 40.5N, longitude 73.4W, that's about 90 miles west-southwest of the eastern tip of Long Island, New York.

Hanna is moving toward the northeast at 30 mph. This general motion is expected to continue, with an increase in forward speed, for the next couple of days.

On the forecast track, the center of Hanna will move across the New England states Saturday night and Sunday morning. Hanna should be headed over the Canadian Maritimes by Sunday afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds are around 55 mph with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 200 miles. Only a small increase is needed for Hanna to become a hurricane, but the storm is not expected to have much change is strength.

Hanna is expected to produce rainfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches from coastal South Carolina northward through North Carolina through the mid-Atlantic states. Some areas could see coastal storm surge flooding of three to five feet above normal, along with dangerous waves.
