NRC Chief To Tour Turkey Point

NRC Plans To Fine FPL $130-Thousand For Security Violations

MIAMI (CBS4) ― More than a month after being cited for serious security violations, officials at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant are gearing up for an inspection tour by the chairman of the nation's Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

NRC spokesman Eliot Brenner said Dale Klein plans to visit the facility on Tuesday. Brenner said while the chairman rarely visits plants, the agency does "tend to pay attention to plants that have had issues that end up in the news." The agency has proposed fining the plant's operator, Florida Power & Light, $130-thousand for the violations which occurred from 2004 to 2006. The agency says security personnel employed by Wackenhut Nuclear Services slept on duty while others covered for the napping guards.
