A Miami-Dade County Judge decided on Wednesday that accused cat killer Tyler Weinman's arrest affidavit will not be unsealed yet, despite pleas from the media and the defense that the document be made public.
The lawyers who are seeking to unseal the arrest affidavit against the Cutler Bay teen accused of killing and mutilating 19 cats in southern Miami-Dade presented their case to Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton Wednesday afternoon. The motion to unseal the document was filed by
CBS4 and our news partners
The Miami Herald.
However, Judge Thornton said if he had to rule right away, he would rule against releasing it, but he did promise that on July 6th everything will be released. Weinman has his arraignment on that date. The judge says whether the arraignment happens or is postponed, all documents will be released, July 6th. Attorneys and reporters gathered in Judge Thornton's courtroom for an evidentiary hearing Wednesday afternoon
Prosecutors have said that one of the major reasons they want the record kept under seal for at least another three weeks is that other suspects in the cat killings are named in the documents. During a hearing last Friday, Judge John Thornton informed the State Attorney that they'd better come up with more compelling witnesses and reason for keeping this arrest document secret any longer. If the State couldn't produce such argument or evidence, Judge Thornton indicated from the bench that he would release some form of the arrest affidavit, perhaps with parts blacked out.
18-year-old Weinman has been charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty for allegedly mutilating and killing 19 cats in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay.
Last week, a judge released Weinman on house arrest after he posted bond and a psychiatrist reported that he was not a threat to himself or society.
