Cat Killings "Arrest" Affidavit To Be Released

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The reason police arrested a Cutler Bay teen for a series of horrific cat mutilations and murders will be made public on Monday.

During a hearing on June 19th, attorneys for CBS4 and news partners The Miami Herald petitioned Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John to unseal the arrest affidavit against 18-year old Tyler Weinman. Prosecutors argued that one of the main reasons they needed to keep the record sealed was that it named at least two other teens as suspects or accomplices in the case. Thornton informed prosecutors that if they weren't able to come up with compelling witnesses or reasons for keeping the affidavit sealed he would release it.   Police and prosecutors were, in essence, given two weeks to either arrest the teens or cut deals with them in exchange for testimony against Weinman.  Thornton made it clear there would be no extensions and he would make his final ruling on the following Wednesday.

During the evidentiary hearing the following week, Thornton ruled that he would release the "probable cause" affidavit on July 6th.

Weinmen, who is also expected to be formally arraigned during a court appearance on Monday, has been charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty for allegedly mutilating and killing 19 cats in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay. If convicted, he could face more than a decade behind bars.
