UF Budget Takes $47 Million Hit

GAINESVILLE (AP) ― The University of Florida's budget is taking a $47 million hit.

President Bernard Machen is giving the bad news to deans and faculty Monday after all the numbers are crunched from the recent session of the Legislature.

The cuts amount to about 6 percent of the university's budget and could include some layoffs and leaving some positions unfilled. The funding drop could also result in a limit on the number of students attending the state's flagship university.

Machen is outlining the cuts in a news conference Monday afternoon.

In addition to the cuts, students will face a 6 percent tuition increase.
