UF, FSU, FAMU Hike Tuition Fees

UF Has Raised Tuition 15 Percent

UF Hit With $47-Million In Budget Cuts

FSU & FAMU Raise Tuition 6 Percent
GAINESVILLE (CBS4) ― The University of Florida's governing body has unanimously approved a 15 percent tuition increase and UF isn't the only university boosting its tuition.

FSU's board has also boosted tuition by 6 percent, along with Florida A&M University. In addition, FAMU trustees approved fee increases in dorm rates, post-office-box rentals, child care and athletics.

The University of Florida, located in Gainesville, is the state's largest public university with about 52,000 students and about 5,285 faculty.

Florida's 11 public universities are all facing tough budget times that included cuts from the Legislature.

UF was hit with a budget cut of $47 million last month. The UF Board of Trustees decided to lay off 20 faculty members and 118 staff members, as well as reduce student enrollment by 1,000 students a year.

"Our priority is to protect the quality and education at the University of Florida," President Bernie Machen said earlier this month. "But clearly, we cannot take reductions this large without making difficult choices."

UF's general revenue budget is $69-million less than it was a year ago.

The university also plans to reduce undergraduate enrollment by 4,000 over the next four years, including decreasing transfer students by 1,000 for next year. Machen said reduction will help maintain the faculty-student ratios.
